Question: Discuss about theBusiness Behaviour and Understand Ethical Decision. Answer: Introduction Business behaviour is guided by the moral principles called business ethics. In a business there are times when a situation arises where it becomes difficult to decide that whether the decision taken is right or not. Nuclothing International has opened its manufacturing unit in Fiji because it will reduce its operating cost. In an article it reflected that children in Fiji are leaving schools to work due to various reasons (Albert, Reynolds, Turan, 2014). As an individual, I find child labour unethical but when discussing with John Nakarawa a citizen of Fiji and a member of board of directors who participated in the recruitments favours it with strong reasons. As a senior manager I have to come on a decision and for that different ethical theories need to be applied on the situation. The decision taken should be ethically correct and in favour of all (Aziz Iskandar, 2013). Ethically - Correct or Incorrect As an individual a person may have certain rules in life, but when it comes to business situation, action, and reaction everything becomes important before taking certain decision. Child labour is an offence, but in most of the underdeveloped and developing country it is very common. The situation in Fiji regarding child labour is severe as people their need money to survive which makes education unimportant for them (Bleazby, 2011). Ethically thinking on humanitarian grounds using children below the age of seventeen for the work made for adults is totally wrong and should be banned in all the countries. But, when a child is working to support his family and bring food in their plate than on some grounds it becomes right. The management of the company in which children are working in becomes questionable for its actions as it allows children to work for them. It is very difficult to decide what is right and what is wrong in the situation (Brannmark, 2009). To handle the situation in Fiji what rules should be followed-Personal rules or the Situational rules? As the situation has arisen in the business, then the theory of business ethics will be applicable to find the solution for the situation. If the decision is taken on the certain personal and moral rules then it means Absolutism theory is followed which says that child labour is a criminal offence and should be avoided in all grounds. If NUclothings International manufacturing unit fire such manpower, then it is going to affect the working of it (Fors, 2010). When applying the business ethic theory of Absolutism to the situation the company suffers a loss of man power, profits, cost of operations will increase, the new man power will be expensive, and the time consumed in finding the man power will decrease the production of the company. But on ethical grounds it will be a good decision because working as a child labour; children are being deprived from their right to get education and joy of childhood. Though, the stakeholders may not be happy with the decision taken as they will be the loss bearers. Also, the children who will lose their job will also suffer as it will affect the earnings of their family (Hahn, 2015). Money can buy everything and therefore it is very important. Another theory that can be applied here is relativism which states to analyse the situation think about its outcome and then take the decision. There is no question that using child labour is very wrong, but when it is helping the children and their family to bring food on their plates then at some point it feels ethical. Money for such families is very important as they are living a life of poverty and that is the reason they want their children to work rather than study (Jackson, 2017). If in the current situation the article is neglected and the things went as they are currently, then it will not going to affect anyone. Everyone one will be happy as the profits will boom, operating cost will reduce and the children working in the company for whatever reason will be earning living for their family. That means the main code of ethic of a business which is to keep stakeholders happy will be complete. But, on moral grounds t his is going to affect the thinking process of people who are associated with the company and on the sustainability of the company (Janzen, 2016). The decision need to be taken as to which theory suits the best Absolutism or Relativism? Technically child labour is an offence and thus, Absolutism theory is correct and whatever loss the company suffers, children should not used for the job. Children should be in school studying and that will bring a better job and life in future for these children. This is will the best way to be ethically and morally correct (Kennedy, Heinzman, Mujtaba, 2011). But, when thinking practically Relativism is the best suited theory and solution for the situation. If children will be removed from the company there is not certainty that they will not take another job as child labour is very common in Fiji so how it will be morally correct as in the company some steps could be taken to improve their situation. Secondly, it will adversely affect the company which means loss of profit, time and manpower. No one will be happy on monetary grounds all the stakeholders will be at loss. So knowing the situati on the things should be continued as they are and no change in the manpower should be done (Levison, Hoek, Lam, Duryea, 2007). The solution is not very difficult because as per the situation there is no certainty that company is using child labour or not. It is just an assumption on the grounds that it is a very common practice in Fiji and John a member of board of directors favours it. The best solution is found exactly what the exact situation of the companys labour is. There are many options that can be used to here to avoid any conflicts (Nepal Nepal, 2012). If there is child labour in the company then removing them will be relatively wrong and badly affect the company but, steps for their education can be taken by the company and some time out of their job can be used by giving them education in the company itself. The job given to these children should be according to their strength. This will help the company to earn sustainability and the situation will handled in somewhat on better moral grounds. This will make everyone happy financially, ethically and morally (Tseng, Duan, Tung, Kung, 2009). Conclusion Decision for anything or a situation is not taken by the business; it is the human who takes the decision and name it to the business. Here, also business is running because some people are running it. Ethically or unethically that business is not deciding. I as human being does not see the need of using child labour in the company, but as a senior manager of the company my responsibilities towards the company becomes more important which makes me take the decision that a thorough research needs to be done on the situation and the actual position of the child labour usage in the company need to be identified and then only decision should be taken. Tragic Situation In Innu Community Until 30 years ago the Innu were nomadic hunters in the forests of eastern Canada. Today they live in communities with high rates of suicide, alcoholism, child abuse and family violence. Canada seems intent on destroying the Innu's land - their sole hope of survival - with a series of mega-projects, which it is pushing despite the fact that the Innu have never signed away their land. Between the 1950s and 1970s the Innu were settled in fixed communities, under pressure from the government and the church. This abrupt change in their way of life has been a catastophe for the Innu. Stuck in communities where there is nothing to do, and cut off from the land which gives their culture meaning, the Innu's society has fallen apart. They blame the tribe's plight on the Canadian Government policy of moving the Innu into villages and away from their traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyles. They lost their life in their land where they have lived for at least 7,000 years. They had no motivation to live and couldn't live without alcohol and gas sniffing. As a result, Alcoholism and Gas-sniffing has been a problem in Sheshatshiu for at least 40 years. Many of the children who sniffed gas then are now the alcoholic parents and grandparents of today's sniffers. In this situation, I think both side of Innu community and Canadian government are responsible for this tragic situation in Labrador with the Innu children and gas sniffing. First, Canadian government should have guaranteed Innu's life in Sheshatshiu. The right of any small community can not be disregarded. Government should respect each community equally. Second, Innu people should not live dependent on alcohol and gas sniffing. If they have a strong will to survive, they can enjoy their life wherever they live. Alcoholism and gas sniffing are not the solution for their problem. If they still have weak will for their life, the situation can not be changed. Anne Frank Biography and the Short Story Line Essays Anne Frank Biography and the Short Story Line Paper Anne Frank Biography and the Short Story Line Paper Annelies Marie Frank (the full name of Anne Frank) was born on June 12, 1929 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Her parents were Otto and Edith Frank. Anne was the second daughter; her sister Margot was three years older. Anne’s father worked at his family’s bank. Her mothers job was to take care of everything at home. Margot and Anne were carefree girls and they had many friends in their neighborhood. However, their parents were worried. Adolf Hitler and his party had made the Jews the scapegoat for all of Germanys social and economic problems. The anti-Semitism in the country was growing. At the beginning of 1933, the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP or Nazi party) came to power in Germany. Adolf Hitler, the leader of this party, becom Chancellor. He was responsible for the new government. Before very long, there was discrimination against Jews. Germany changed from a democracy into a dictatorship. Anne’s parents no longer felt safe. Otto Frank’s bank was also in financial trouble because of the worldwide economic crisis. Otto and Edith Frank decided to leave Germany. The Frank family went to the Netherlands in the summer of 1933. Anne’s father had the opportunity to set up a company in Amsterdam that sold Opekta (an ingredient used for making jam). During that period, Anne and Margot stayed with their Grandmother who lived in Aachen, Germany. Their mother commuted to and from Amsterdam trying to find the family a place to live. In their now home in Amsterdam, the Frank Family felt free and safe, until the German Army invaded the Netherlands on May 10, 1940. The Occupation of the Netherlands began on May 15, 1940. The discrimination against the Jews began then as well: Jews couldnt own their own businesses, Jewish children had to go to Jewish schools, all Jews had to wear a yellow star, and countless other restrictions. There were even rumors that the Jews would be packed off to Germany. The rumors that Jews would have to go to Germany, just like thousands of other Jews living in Europe, were true, The Nazis planned to send all the Jews to work camps in Germany. In 14. 06. 1942, Annes 13 birthday, she received a lot of gifts, one of them was a diary from her parents, she on him the letters to her imagination friend- Kitty. Three month after Anne’s birth- day Margot receives a call-up to Westerbork camp, with the threat that the entire family will be arrested if Margot does not report. The Frank family was frightened from that letter and they decided to do something. So in 9. 7. 1942 Anne and her family (Otto, Edith, and Margot) went to a hiding place in Ottos work building. In the building’s Annexe Otto and some of him friends at work (Miep Gies, Elisabeth (Bep) Voskuijl, Johannes Kleimwn, and Victor Kugler) created a place for two families to stay for a while until the end of the war. After a week the van Daan Family (Hermenn, Petronella, and Peter) joined them at the Annexe. The Annexe was split, the Franks in the first floor- Otto, Edith, and Margot in one room and Anne in the second and the van Daans in the second floor Hermenn and Petronella in one room (that also was the dining room and the kitchen), and Peter was in the second room (that also was the way to go up- stairs to the attic). After a while the Nazis started to look for hiding Jews all over Amsterdam, so one of the helpers build a bookcase (that can move) to hide the doorway to the Annexe. The time passed and the seven hiding people decided that they have enough room and food to hide another person, so they asked Miep (another one of their helpers) to fined some one she knows and need a place to hide in. Miep did find a man (44 years old) named Albert Dussel. Albert joined the Annexe in 10. 11. 42 to share Annes room. Wail the eight of them were in the Annexe, downstairs people were working; only the helpers know that there were people in hiding upstairs, so the hiding people had to not move and not toke (if it is necessary, to whisper) all of the work hours. Their helpers brought the hiding people food. At the beginning they had enough food for three meals. But as the time passed they had problems getting food for all eight people. At the last six- five month they had only one glass of porridge for breakfast, a bit of lettuce and brown beans (even rotten) for lunch, and for dinner the same. In 25 on May 1944 Anne wrote to her dairy: Mother says well skip breakfast, eat porridge and bread for lunch and fried potatoes for dinner and, if possible, vegetables or lettuce once or twice a week. Cultural Diffusion and Imperialism World has now become a global village. By global village what we mean is that everything is available to every person through the process of free information flow (Ascher, 2010). Globalization has brought everything closer and that has happened through cultural diffusion. Now to understand what cultural diffusion is, we first have to have a fair idea over what is diffusion. Secondly there is well defined process through which a culture is diffused in other cultures and makes it mark. This culture diffusion affects international business to the core because when we say that globalization have made its presence felt in the global economy, we see that it is there because of culture diffusion in different ways. This has also lead to come sort of cultural imperialism which we shall discuss in length in paragraphs to come. Culture diffusion happens when non material and material culture travels to another culture (Wise, 2008). How this happens is a million dollar question which needs to be answered correctly and to the point. To have a profound knowledge over how it happens we go to the basics of it which is culture hearth. Now culture hearth is a place where civilizations first began and then they spread to different areas. Nowadays culture hearths are considered to be in those countries which are well developed and whose culture gets diffused to other developing countries because they have to be in tandem with each other so to have a good and viable trade. If we talk by considering the present world and international trade, we see that this cultural diffusion has spread many cultural straits wherever they got a chance to get diffused. Sometimes this spread is so rapid that no one can find out its origin, timing and spread. There are two different ways in which a culture is diffused to another culture ; one is acculturation and another is Assimilation (Howes, 1996). Both are the ways in which culture is diffused in another culture. In acculturation what happens is that some cultural traits of strong cultures are being taken up by weak cultures like in ancient times we see that Spain had some cultural traits which are taken from Aztecs. Similarly if we see examples in the modern world we observe that a very common greeting hello is also a cultural trait which is being taken by many cultures as a greeting by default. Why that happened so? Because it has its roots in western world and as West dominated for the last two centuries, all the trade, rules and policies were being written and implemented by Western countries which influenced weak cultures to adopt the greeting and many other things which now we call globalization. On the other hand, another way in which a culture can be diffused is through assimilation. In assimilation what happens is that cultures are intertwined with each other in such a way that it is hard to distinguish between where its origin had been. Lets for example when Arabs came to Indian Subcontinent, the Indians had nothing than a piece of cloth worn up to their knees with an open jacket as their vests but Arabs brought a new culture of a full length suit of cloth covering whole body. Now after centuries the Mongols and the warriors from Afghanistan brought minor changes to the original dress which made people easy to carry, walk and most of all made it best attire which can be used for combat purposes also. End result was that the whole thing got assimilated with each other so quickly that there was little difference left between what people wear in Arabian countries mainly the natives of Arab Emirates and the people wear in subcontinent. It specially pertains to the dressing of men. Other thing which effects diffusion is the cultural barriers, time and distance delay and lastly physical barriers (Rauth, 2004). Cultural barriers includes things which are not acceptable to other culture at any cost for example Mc Donald came up in India with its different burgers mainly in beef but as Indians hold cow as sacred, they do not go for it so Mc Donald have to introduce veggie burgers instead of beef as local cultural barrier never allowed any assimilation or acculturization to take place. In time and distance delay, diffusion is hampered because time and distance which it would take to reach another culture would be more and then would become less futile for example Eskimos who live at poles, their cultures and way of living is different from us and still they are yet to have culture diffusion (Howes, 1996). Time and distance delay is somewhat linked with the physical barriers also which also helps in making things bad for cultural diffusion to take place for example t he terrain which is very tough to pass would obviously make things worse for people to travel hence making it hard to diffuse a culture or similarly a sharp weather change would also create a physical barrier for culture diffusion to take place as it would be difficult to take things from one culture to another as culture traits differ from each other or not even close to each other. That culture is diffused either in expansionary diffusion or relocated diffusion (Said, 1994). We have seen that expansionary diffusion have taken place in most of the places in world where West culture is being adopted by the elite and now it is being transmitted to the lower end of the population. This sort of diffusion is known as hierarchical diffusion in where the spread of a new culture takes place from top to bottom. Example of this is the coffee shops like star bucks, which had no concept in south Asia but they are brought by Westerners who came here for business purposes. They first inculcated the trend in elite and now it is being adopted by every person as it have has transformed many old kiosks for betel leaves and cigarettes into coffee shops. Similarly blackberries; many corporate customers have this gadget in their hands which is attracting other upper middle class people to have it too so to have some satisfaction. Other types include relocation diffusion which happen s when people take their innovations with them to a new place like for example Jews. Jews in Europe were really good in scientific knowledge and due to their astuteness they were being victimized and were sent to concentration camps. When after the world war they relocated themselves in different parts of the world, they went with their knowledge and innovations which brought a lot of prosperity around the globe. Another example of it can be AIDS which spread through relocation diffusion as disease is carried by one person who migrates to another society with having a different culture. Now as diffusion is discussed at length, we now see that whether cultural imperialism can be established through cultural diffusion? Yes to some extent I would agree to it because in international business when there is trade and goods flow from one place to another, it not only takes a new product across the borders but also takes its culture to another place. In other words level of diffusion depends on the factors discussed above and also on a culture being strong as to the culture where it is being diffused as being weak (Hobson, 2010). Like for example the trend of suits around the world, from where it came? It came and assimilated in our culture because it was being followed by a strong culture or in cultural hearth which is American and Europe and from there it diffused to all parts of the world. Mens formal suitings, as we all know, have such an importance that now if a south Korean business tycoon needs to do a deal with his Indian counterpart to open up a microchip factory in Delhi, they would be following their own business rules and formalities but their attire would be formal and would follow the strong cultures dress code which is to have a formal dress suit.
